2020/21 Trapping and Snaring Season
As an active fur harvester with over 40 trapping seasons under my belt, I was very thankful for another productive season and the time I could spend out in the field. I caught 80 coyotes, 10 foxes, 5 wolves, 2 lynx, 25 beaver, 52 muskrats and 8 squirrels. The top fur prices were paid for my select top grade coyotes. Prices fell dramatically for damaged and inferior goods. That means that during the coldest shortest days when the fur is in its best shape, that is when you have to be out operating and snares are the most productive fur harvesting tools during those conditions. This year I field tested Marty Senneker’s new Shock Lock and I had good results. We are now offering them for sale on our website, wolftrapping.com. They are smaller than the Cam Lock which means they are less visible and harder to detect. This translates into less snare refusals and better catches. I was also reminded this year how photos or film can be used to shed trapping and snaring in a negative light. In a time of social media it is so very important to know your local laws and to be sure that all activities are legal before posting pictures or making public comments online.
